Greetings everyone! Recently, for my English class, I had to create a slideshow of a review on a book of choice. Having already read The Giver by Lois Lowry, my English teacher gave me a copy of the Graphic Novel version of it Illustrated and Adapted by P. Craig Russell. Throughout this post, I’ll be touching on the Summary (spoiler free), the best character and moment, my favorite quote, what I learned, and my final rating. Of course, these are all my personal thoughts on the book so If you agree or disagree it’s encouraged to share your ideas down below, I’m all about building a community here so please feel free to do so! Let us begin…
STORY SUMMARY
“The Giver” follows the life of soon to be twelve-years-old, Jonas living oblivious in a dystopian society. In a ceremony in which Jonas will be assigned an occupation to pursue for the rest of his life, something strange happens that frightens and confuses him. Although resolved at the conclusion of the ceremony, his so called ability of having “the capacity to see beyond” will forever change the way he not only views his community and society, but the world.
BEST CHARACTER
The best character in “The Giver” is Jonas. Throughout the story Jonas is changing and the more knowledge he receives the more he awakes to the truth, both the prosperity and the tragic. He’s such an interesting character because you can see his transformation as he learns more about the world which is something you don’t get from any other character in the story.
BEST MOMENT
The best moment belongs to Jonas whispering to Gabriel, a baby Jonas’ Dad had brought back to their dwellings to nurture him to the communities “optimal” size. It came after Jonas had learned and received memories about warmth, fun, and the most eye opening, love. Jonas soothes Gabe and tells him about the possibilities out there in the world and the emotions that are possible to feel and enjoy.
BEST QUOTE
“It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?”- The Giver
This quote has significance because it’s almost like the turning point in Jonas’ life, the ability to have choice is stripped away from the citizens of this community and they have absolutely no idea. Jonas on the other hand is finally realizing the importance of choice and how there is none left in the society he’s in thanks to the knowledgeable insight of The Giver.
WHAT I LEARNED
This story was incredibly written and drawn out to emphasize the way Jonas’ society was like. I learned many things from reading this, one of which was the magnitude of our world in every aspect. From relaxation, to starvation, to war, to music, to love, it’s all here in this world and we must embrace the good and never forget the bad because that’s what makes Earth beautiful.
