The Giver (Graphic Novel) Review

Greetings everyone! Recently, for my English class, I had to create a slideshow of a review on a book of choice. Having already read The Giver by Lois Lowry, my English teacher gave me a copy of the Graphic Novel version of it Illustrated and Adapted by P. Craig Russell. Throughout this post, I’ll be touching on the Summary (spoiler free), the best character and moment, my favorite quote, what I learned, and my final rating. Of course, these are all my personal thoughts on the book so If you agree or disagree it’s encouraged to share your ideas down below, I’m all about building a community here so please feel free to do so! Let us begin…

STORY SUMMARY

“The Giver” follows the life of soon to be twelve-years-old, Jonas living oblivious in a dystopian society. In a ceremony in which Jonas will be assigned an occupation to pursue for the rest of his life, something strange happens that frightens and confuses him. Although resolved at the conclusion of the ceremony, his so called ability of having “the capacity to see beyond” will forever change the way he not only views his community and society, but the world.

BEST CHARACTER

The best character in “The Giver” is Jonas. Throughout the story Jonas is changing and the more knowledge he receives the more he awakes to the truth, both the prosperity and the tragic. He’s such an interesting character because you can see his transformation as he learns more about the world which is something you don’t get from any other character in the story.

BEST MOMENT

The best moment belongs to Jonas whispering to Gabriel, a baby Jonas’ Dad had brought back to their dwellings to nurture him to the communities “optimal” size. It came after Jonas had learned and received memories about warmth, fun, and the most eye opening, love. Jonas soothes Gabe and tells him about the possibilities out there in the world and the emotions that are possible to feel and enjoy.

BEST QUOTE

“It’s the choosing that’s important, isn’t it?”- The Giver

This quote has significance because it’s almost like the turning point in Jonas’ life, the ability to have choice is stripped away from the citizens of this community and they have absolutely no idea. Jonas on the other hand is finally realizing the importance of choice and how there is none left in the society he’s in thanks to the knowledgeable insight of The Giver.

WHAT I LEARNED

This story was incredibly written and drawn out to emphasize the way Jonas’ society was like. I learned many things from reading this, one of which was the magnitude of our world in every aspect. From relaxation, to starvation, to war, to music, to love, it’s all here in this world and we must embrace the good and never forget the bad because that’s what makes Earth beautiful.

How to Deal with a Lack of Motivation

Well, it’s been a little less than a week in and I’m already struggling with writer’s block. Upon creating this blog, I had so much ideas and aspirations that I wanted to become a reality, however, now that I have actually done so… It’s a little more difficult to continue on.

I personally feel like one of the best ways to gain motivation (in terms of writing) is simply just to write! I was in a slump and was really contemplating what I wanted this blog to become all because I didn’t feel like writing, imagine all the things you can miss on just because you don’t feel like doing it. As said by US Olympic Gymnast Simone Biles, “I’d rather regret the risks that didn’t workout than the chances I didn’t take at all.”
Really, all it takes from making a decision that could positively change your life forever or having regret for the rest of your life can entirely rely on your motivation, and if you don’t have any, you gotta make some! Don’t miss out on an opportunity because you don’t have any at the moment.

After writing this I truly feel excited and motivated on what’s to come with this blog, I really want to make this work so we can build a community of hope, joy, and of course inspiration. And that, is way more than enough to motivate me.

Take care,
-Chance

Who I am & My Aspirations

The sudden feeling of a spark of motivation to accomplish something is nothing short of incredible. That sudden feeling that makes you beam with excitement and determination to make a positive mark in the world is something we should all be seeking. I’m talking about… Inspiration!

Hello everyone! My pen name is Chance, I’m 15, and a freshmen in High school. Doing a monologue wasn’t exactly part of my initial plan but, describing how I think what Inspiration feels like seemed like the perfect way to introduce what I plan on achieving with this platform. I want to build a community where we can inspire and be inspired by each other!

A little more about me, I enjoy creating art and stories, I’m a future track athlete, I’m a huge sports fanatic (Any Miami related team), I would like to become an architect one day, and I live in the US! Of course there’s more but, I hope over the duration of the blog we as a community can learn about one another and for sure feel that spark that fills you up with hope.

Take care!

Weekly Inspiration

The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
– Martin Luther King Jr

This has indeed been a very trying time in our world but as MLK suggests, theses are the moments where we need to show our true nature as human beings. Giving what you can, comforting one another, and being there for each other are just a few ways we can make a positive impact within our communities. Of course, social distancing is a very great way to help the vulnerable members in our society so we should continue practicing that. Other than that, stay safe everyone, I hope you have an inspired week.

All the best,
-Chance

Community

One of my main goals in creating this blog was to build a community of like-minded people who can depend on one another and inspire each other. Here is the place just for that! Share ideas, hobbies, keep track of your goals, talk with and encourage each other, enjoy the company of inspired people!

See ya around,
-Chance
